'In Rainbows' Radiohead (2007)

5/10

Blah blah blah: they gave it away on the Internet. Forget all the ink and pixels spilled over this album’s rollout. Aside from being a marketing coup, it was also their best collection of straight-up melodies since (wait for it) OK Computer. Anyone who moans that the boys are too far inside their own formalist heads these days forgot to listen to the groove (and joyous-kid chorus) of “15 Step,” or otherwise notice Eros hard at work in “House of Cards.” To make such a tight, disciplined album, the band had to leave a couple winners on the cutting-room floor bonus-CD, too (“Down Is the New Up,” “Bangers + Mash”).
