Cultural Moments
If Karl Rove is called “The Architect” of the Republican Party, then the Democratic Party should anoint Tina Fey “The Impersonator.” When Fey donned that wig and folksy Alaskan drawl, sure, it was funny. But never had a political impersonation been so dangerous. You didn’t have to be a soccer mom to know the Republican Party met its toughest opponent. Not only did Tina singlehandedly shut down the 2008 Republican campaign but she sent a strong message out to any future candidates: don’t choose a running mate that looks slightly similar to one of the funniest people in comedy. Palin quickly went from overnight Republican superstar to a larger-than-life buffoon who made Homer Simpson look smart. People stopped watching actual news clips of Palin and starting watching Tina’s version instead. The truth was that Tina’s Sarah was even better than Sarah’s Sarah. Even Rush Limbaugh’s cold Oxycontin-coated heart was defenseless against Tina’s charm. McCain would have been better off running with a conehead as VP; at least they have foreign-policy experience. In 2012 if Obama wants to lock up the election, he’d just better hope Tina’s willing to get that wig out of storage.
