On Oct. 9, 2007, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached its highest point in history. A few days later the world celebrated by reaching one of its lowest moral points in history with the arrival of 2 Girls 1 Cup (and its countless reaction videos). For the uninitiated, 2 Girls 1 Cup is a one-minute video that features two women defecating into a cup, eating the feces, and vomiting it into each others’ mouths. Where 2 Girls 1 Cup transcends other gross-out videos is its ability to evoke in the viewer not only disgust at the actions seen on the screen, but also deep existential horror at the state of civilization as a whole--prompting most spectators to question whether or not the human race perhaps should have reached that weird-fish-with-legs phase and then called it a day on the whole “evolving” thing. Our greatest national fear should be that terrorists travel back to 1620 and show this video to the Pilgrims, explaining that it’s the future of their beloved America. Most of our ancestors would immediately return to Europe in shame, and the remaining ones would straight-up burn themselves at the stake. (After all, these girls are showing their ankles.) Every time something morally bankrupt hits popular culture, the masses toss up their arms and cry “Now we’ve hit rock bottom.” Oh, masses, when will you learn? The Internet is the sharpest shovel in the world.
